Scales Turn to Feathers by artist IKECHI in collaboration with Chase Uhl, is inspired by the idea that our origins as a species are tied more closely to the sea than the widely accepted theory that humans evolved from apes. Put differently, the work was created to raise questions about our relationship with water. Why is it that over 60 % of the body is made of water? Why is it that we can’t survive more than about three days without this mysterious substance? Lastly, why are so many of the words we use that connect to our monetary system also words that involve water (for example banks, sales, and current/currency to name a few)?

If water is germane to the existence of sentient life on earth as it arrived over 3.8 billion years ago making the planet habitable, then wouldn’t water be the origin point of life as we know it? The hand symbolizes the grasp and understanding of these ideas. The color/skin tone of the hand represents the people as the origins of man can be traced back to East Africa. One of the final layers underpinning the work is the idea of advancement. Scales represent the starting point while feathers represent the peek. In this way, there’s a progressive upward trajectory as we graduated from water beings to more uninhibited air beings.
